Guide for Libraries Using Alma (Ex Libris Product) to Enable DOI Indexing
This is the official guide from Ex Libris - https://knowledge.exlibrisgroup.com/Alma/Product_Documentation/010Alma_Online_Help_%28English%29/090Integrations_with_External_Systems/030Resource_Management/210Alma_Resolver_Augmentation
Our Own Overview
By default, Alma does not recognise DOI (Digital Object Identifier). To enable DOI recognition, an augmentation must be activated. You must also provide CrossRef account details (if you do not have any, an account can be registered for free directly with CrossRef).
Steps to Set Up DOI Recognition in Alma
Create an Account with CrossRef:
An account with CrossRef is required for this setup.
CrossRef will provide a username and password, which must be added to Alma’s configuration to enable DOI discovery. If you don't have these follow step 2.
How to get Account Details:
Reach out to CrossRef to set up an account.
Specify that this is for setting up OpenURL compatibility within Alma.
Emphasise that you need a "free library account" for this purpose to avoid confusion.
Submit a request form (at the bottom of this page - https://www.crossref.org/community/librarians/)
Add the CrossRef account details to Alma:
Once you receive the account details from CrossRef, it is best to follow the official Ex-Libris guide which has a screenshot in the section titled "Alma Resolver Augmentation Configuration" - https://knowledge.exlibrisgroup.com/Alma/Product_Documentation/010Alma_Online_Help_%28English%29/090Integrations_with_External_Systems/030Resource_Management/210Alma_Resolver_Augmentation
Important Notes
When contacting CrossRef, explain that the account is needed to support OpenURL functions within Alma.
This should bypass initial misunderstandings about the nature of the account required.
Several universities and colleges have verified that this setup should be free of charge.
Following these steps means that Alma will recognise DOI queries, enhancing its discovery capabilities through the OpenURL configuration.
